hardback, octavo, red cloth lettered gilt to spine, paper heavily age-toned, foxing to endpapers, a good tightly bound copy in a worn dust wrapper that shows evidence of cellotape reinforcement to top edge and has loss at head of spine, now protected in a non-adhesive archival film sleeve, signature of a previous owner part effaced from front free endpaper, the text is unmarked, 288pp. Peter Baker, war hero who was awarded the Military Cross for his work behind enemy lines but whose reckless behaviour was in part responsible for the execution of an entire Dutch family. He was elected as the youngest member of the House of Commons, found guilty of forgery on seven counts and was imprisoned for seven years. At his bankruptcy hearing it was found he had liabilities of more than 385,000 and assets of less than ten guineas. A cracking read.
